5 Tips for a Successful Family Beach Session
If you're dreaming of witnessing your little one’s toes touch the sand for the first time, or watching your kids jump in the water in the warm glow of the sun or listening to laughter echoing against the waves during your next family photo session, you're in the right place.
In this guide, I’ll share my top tips for a successful family beach session so that you can leave the stress behind and instead enjoy a session that will not only lend itself to beautiful artwork for your home but also create core memories that will last a lifetime.
Tip 1: Timing is Everything!
In the world of beach photography, timing is the key to beautiful photos. I always suggest starting 45 minutes before the sun sets during the Golden Hour - that magical window of time when the light dances on the shoreline with a warm, golden glow. Just after the sun sets (depending on the beach) the Blue Hour also lends itself to gorgeous lighting and often produces those colorful skies you see in some of my beach family sessions.
I know it can feel late in the summertime for little ones, but trust me, in over 9 years of experience, I’ve never had an unhappy little one on the beach in the evening!
Tip 2: the right Styling adds storytelling elements
Picture this: breezy dresses, casual beachy vibes, and coordinated color palettes that complement the sea and sky. When dressing for your New Hampshire or Massachusetts family beach session, think relaxed boho vibes. Avoid overly busy patterns and instead, opt for complementary tones that enhance the coastal backdrop.
I typically suggest my families dress in warm tones (earth tones are best) because the sky and water will naturally bring cooler tones. Above all, comfort is key for those candid moments of joy and exploration, especially for little ones! And if this is a point of worry for you, I always walk my families through the styling process for every session, and you can even borrow from my exclusive client closet! Together, we’ll make sure you’re dressed for beautiful images and in a way that feels like you!
Tip 3: Let your Kids guide the session
Kids and beaches are a match made in heaven. As an adult, some of my best memories are the times I spent with my own family on the beaches in York, ME.
Encourage your little ones to embrace the location. Allow them to dig and play in the sand, chase seagulls, or splash in the waves (usually saved for the end of the session). These authentic interactions make for the most heartwarming images and ensure natural smiles.
Tip 4: embrace the candid, Storytelling approach
Your family beach session is more than just a photoshoot; it's a core memory ready to unfold. Be prepared to engage in activities that naturally draw out your family's unique dynamic. A stroll along the water's edge, a spontaneous game of tag, or a family hug – these are the moments that paint a vivid picture of who your family is.
Just as no two sunsets are the same, no two beach family sessions are the same. By being flexible with both the surroundings and your little ones, the memories and images we will create together will be perfectly you.
Tip 5: what to bring to your session
Ensuring a seamless family photo session starts with thoughtful preparation. In my detailed pre-session email, I cover essential tips to make your experience a breeze. From wardrobe suggestions to beach essentials, being well-prepared minimizes potential challenges, allowing us to focus on capturing beautiful moments together. Below are some of the tips I share that are particularly important for beach family sessions.
First, I always suggest that little ones be changed upon arrival so as not to wrinkle or spill anything on their outfits. Second, make sure to bring something comfortable to travel home in — often this is pajamas because sessions tend to end around or later than a typical bedtime for young children. Last, bring towels for everyone to dry off and wipe sand off with. Hot tip — baby powder works wonders when trying to wipe sand off wet skin!
As you embark on your family beach session adventure, remember that the best moments are often the unplanned ones. Let the location set the stage, and allow your family's story to unfold organically. These tips are merely a guide; the real magic lies in the genuine connections and laughter that make your family truly unique. So, pack your sunscreen and a sense of adventure – the beach is waiting for your family’s story to unfold.
